| George Michael -Keeping the Faith in George Michael |
| 09.24.06 (1:55 pm) [edit] |
| The Live 8 show last year marked George's return to the stage | George Michael kicks off his first tour for 15 years in Barcelona on Saturday - and the first performing his own material for 18 years. John Hand, who is going to the show, explains why fans have always kept Patience with the star. Like most people, I will always remember my first time. It was a summery day at the start of my teens and there were 70,000 other people there - mainly screaming girls but also "boys in leather kissing girls in pearls", to quote the Wham Rap. Yes, I was a teenage Wham! fan and the first concert I ever attended was the Wembley Stadium show in June 1986 that officially marked the chart-topping duo's split. George Michael - the introspective one who sang and wrote the songs - went on to sell millions more records on both sides of the Atlantic and keep himself in the headlines for a variety of reasons. Andrew Ridgeley, whose role in the band seemed to be to look cool and goof around on guitar, recorded one poorly-received solo album, married a Bananarama singer and has since enjoyed racing cars and surfing in Cornwall, with barely a thought for his former music career. |

| Kidman Not on Jolie's Case |
| 09.20.06 (5:17 pm) [edit] |
|
Anyone out there hoping for a Nicole Kidman-Angelina Jolie smackdown probably shouldn't hold their breath.
A Scottish newspaper has publicly apologized for attributing negative remarks about Jolie's charity work to Kidman in a Sept. 8 article.
The report in question suggested that Kidman was judging Jolie for using her philanthropic toils as a means of getting attention.
"It's not like Angelina is any better than a nurse working in a hospital, but she's getting the publicity for her contribution," Scotland's Daily Record quoted Kidman as saying.
"I have a friend who is a doctor and every year he works in Africa for two months for no money. So everyone is on the same playing field, whether you offer your services as the doctor or as Angelina does."
The purported remarks were subsequently disseminated via online gossip sites.
However, according to Kidman's publicist, Catherine Olim, the actress never said any such thing.
"The Daily Record, which attempted to suggest a rift between Ms. Kidman and Ms. Jolie, as well as malice on Ms. Kidman's part, has confirmed that it attributed remarks that she did not make to them," Olim said in a statement.
"Ms. Kidman has tremendous admiration for Angelina Jolie and her tireless, worldwide charitable work, as well as for the work of countless less well known volunteers in areas of need around the world."
The Daily Record acknowledged that Kidman never made the remarks and apologized for "any upset caused."
Both Kidman and Jolie serve as goodwill ambassadors to the United Nations. Kidman represents UNIFEM, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, while Jolie represents UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

| Owen backs 'proper actor' as Bond |
| 09.20.06 (12:27 am) [edit] |
| Craig is to play Bond for a second time in a film due out in 2008 | Clive Owen has backed "proper actor" Daniel Craig as James Bond, predicting that his first film as 007 will show "what a great choice he was". Owen, who had been linked to the iconic role before Craig was chosen, told BBC News: "He is not shallow or posing, they have cast a really serious actor." He said criticism of the choice was inevitable, but that people would "get off his back when the film comes out". Casino Royale, the 21st official Bond film, opens on 17 November. "I think when Craig first took the part he got a pretty rough ride, which to a certain extent is inevitable because there are so many different people who have so many different ideas about something like that," said Owen. "You are never going to please everybody." But he added: "The thing that is really exciting is that he is a proper actor. Owen was once a frontrunner for the role of James Bond | "He is not shallow or posing, they have cast a really serious actor and I think that when the film comes out everyone will see what a great choice he was." The world premiere of Casino Royale, on 14 November at the Odeon Leicester Square in London, has been chosen for the 60th Royal Film Performance. The film is based on the first of Ian Fleming's celebrated spy novels. Owen was speaking to the BBC ahead of the release on Friday of his new film Children of Men, a 2027-set thriller that also stars Sir Michael Caine and Julianne Moore. |

What do you call 500 lawyers lying on the bottom of the Ocean? A good start... -- Danny DeVito (The War of the Roses, 1989) When a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher knife and a hard-on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross. -- Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry, 1971) Husbands should be like Kleenex: soft, strong, and disposable. -- Madeleine Kahn (from the film Clue - 1985 - Jonathan Lynn, John Landis) I have strong feelings about gun control. If there's a gun around, I want to be controlling it. -- Clint Eastwood (from Pink Cadillac, 1989 - John Eskow) Drama is life with the dull bits left out. -- Alfred Hitchcock A good film is when the price of the dinner, the theatre admission and the babysitter were worth it. -- Alfred Hitchcock A film is never really any good unless the camera is an eye in the head of a poet. -- Orson Welles Our comedies are not to be laughed at. -- Samuel Goldwyn Once a month the sky falls on my head, I come to, and I see another movie I want to make. -- Steven Spielberg This film cost $31 million. | JRR Tolkien-Son Completes Unfinished |
| 09.19.06 (2:36 pm) [edit] |
| Tolkien is considered by many to be the first fantasy author | An unfinished book by JRR Tolkien has been completed by his son and is to be published next year. Christopher Tolkien has spent 30 years working on The Children of Hurin, which The Lord of the Rings author started in 1918 and later abandoned. Extracts from The Children of Hurin have been published before. JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings trilogy has sold more than 50 million copies and was adapted into three hugely successful films. "It has seemed to me for a long time that there was a good case for presenting my father's long version of the legend of The Children of Hurin as an independent work, between its own covers," Christopher Tolkien said in a statement. The story involves the elves and dwarves that feature in much of Tolkien's work. He died in Oxford on 2 September 1973, aged 81.

| Cancer linked to rotating shifts |
| 09.18.06 (2:07 pm) [edit] |
|
Men who work a rotating shift pattern may be at increased risk of prostate cancer, research suggests.
Japanese scientists found that staff working rotating shifts were four times as likely to develop the disease as those working day or night shifts.
But British experts said the findings were far from conclusive.
The University of Occupational and Environmental Health study, of more than 14,000 workers, features in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
"There is a long way to go before we can say for sure whether sleep disturbance is linked to prostate cancer"-Henry Scowcroft
Shift work has also been linked to an increased risk of breast and bowel cancer.
The study also found that night shift workers were at a slightly increased risk of prostate cancer, compared with those who only worked days.
The researchers suggest the key may be reduced secretion of the hormone melatonin, which the body uses to induce sleep.
Melatonin has also been shown to have anti-cancer effects.
Reduced secretion of melatonin has been linked to increased production of sex hormones, which play a role in regulating prostate tissues.
In normal circumstances, secretion of the hormone is low during daytime, increases soon after the onset of darkness, peaks in the middle of the night, and gradually falls until morning.

| Body washes up on CSI: Miami set |
| 09.17.06 (6:02 pm) [edit] |
|
David Caruso leads the CSI: Miami team
The set of CSI: Miami became a real-life police investigation scene when a body washed up during filming.
An off-duty police officer working on the set was alerted to a body floating in Bicentennial Park.
An autopsy will be carried out but police are not treating the death as suspicious at this time.
Earlier in the week a mummified body was found inside a building in Los Angeles where spin-off drama CSI: New York was being filmed.
The cast and crew of CSI: Miami were filming offshore to get aerial shots from a helicopter when the body was spotted.
"Unfortunately, it's not unusual during certain times of the year that people who have fallen in the bay, either homeless people or people who were asleep or in some cases boaters who had a mishap, fall into the bay and turn up days later," said Detective Delrish Moss.

| World Bank Urges Boost for Young |
| 09.17.06 (5:58 pm) [edit] |
|
Access to education is a priority need, especially for girls
Developing countries must invest in young people, promoting education and health and developing essential skills, a major World Bank report says.
The World Development Report says there are now a record 1.3 billion people aged 12-24 living around the world.
Those numbers could create problems in many nations if societies do not adapt, World Bank officials warn.
Although the number of young in primary education is rising, the report says some 130 million cannot read or write.
Young people are thought to make up about half the world's unemployed, the report says.
It also estimates that about 100 million new jobs need to be created in the Middle East and across North Africa before 2020 to cope with the numbers of young people seeking work.

| Puffy planet poses pretty puzzle |
| 09.16.06 (8:49 pm) [edit] |
| An artist's impression of the strange new world, HAT-P-1 | Astronomers have found a strange new world that has them pondering again the essential properties of a planet. This new object, designated HAT-P-1, orbits one member of a pair of stars 450 light-years away in the constellation Lacerta. Although HAT-P-1's radius is about 1.38 times that of our own Jupiter, it has a mass that is only half that of Jupiter. This makes it much bigger and lower in density than planets are usually, raising questions about how it formed. The mathematical equations describing planetary structure do not fit. "This planet is about one-quarter the density of water," said Gaspar Bakos, a Hubble fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). "In other words, it's lighter than a giant ball of cork! Just like Saturn, it would float in a bathtub if you could find a tub big enough to hold it, but it would float almost three times higher." HAT-P-1 is one of the 200 or so planets that have been detected outside our Solar System. It has the largest radius yet measured. Like many of these extrasolar bodies, it orbits close to its parent star, revolving around it in just once every 4.5 Earth days. |

| Robbie Cancels Asian Tour Dates |
| 09.16.06 (8:41 pm) [edit] |
| The cancelled dates were all scheduled for November | Pop star Robbie Williams has called off the Asian leg of his world tour, citing stress and exhaustion. The former Take That singer was to have visited Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Mumbai (Bombay) and Bangalore between 4 and 26 November. Tickets had gone on sale for the Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore dates. A spokesman said that to perform in China, India and south east Asia after honouring European and South American commitments "would be asking too much". Williams performs the second of five dates at the Milton Keynes Bowl on Friday, the last concerts in the UK leg of the tour. |

| Pope 'sorry' for offence to Islam |
| 09.16.06 (8:37 pm) [edit] |
| The Vatican said the Pope's remarks had been misinterpreted | Pope Benedict XVI has said he is sorry that a speech in which he referred to Islam has offended Muslims. In a statement read out by a senior Vatican official, the Pope said he respected Islam and hoped Muslims would understand the true sense of his words. In Tuesday's speech the Pope quoted a 14th Century Christian emperor who said the Prophet Muhammad had brought the world only "evil and inhuman" things. The remarks prompted protests from Muslims around the world. Political and religious leaders in Muslim countries criticised the remarks and called for the pontiff to make a personal apology. The BBC's Christian Fraser in Rome says the speed with which the Vatican has reacted shows just how seriously it views the situation. Reading the statement, new Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone said the Pope's position on Islam was in line with Vatican teaching that the Church "esteems Muslims, who adore the only God". "The Holy Father is very sorry that some passages of his speech may have sounded offensive to the sensibilities of Muslim believers," the statement said. |

| A Bird? A Plane? No, its John Lenon-II |
| 09.16.06 (11:58 am) [edit] |
|
A new film about John Lennon's peace campaign and the U.S. government's efforts to silence him presents the former Beatle as a Superman figure battling evil, but no saint, according to his widow Yoko Ono.
"The U.S. vs John Lennon," which will be released in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, is a documentary pieced together from old newsreels and rarely seen home movies.
It documents FBI surveillance of Lennon and his battle with immigration authorities who tried to deport him in the 1970s in what the film says was an effort to stifle his anti-Vietnam War activism.
Some critics said the film effectively presents Lennon and Ono as united throughout even though they were separated and he was living with another woman for more than a year at the time.
"This story, which is the true story and a very important story, has not been discussed so much as the tabloid thing," she said at a news conference.

| A Bird? A Plane? No, its John Lenon-III |
| 09.16.06 (11:57 am) [edit] |
|
"I don't think he's coming out as a saint," Ono added, pointing to scenes where Lennon is angry or impatient.
"The struggle that he went through confronting these big powers, it's almost like a very interesting Superman kind of thing -- bad against good," she said.
The film features new interviews with George McGovern, the Democratic presidential nominee who lost to Richard Nixon in 1972; journalist Carl Bernstein, who helped break the Watergate story that brought Nixon down; former Nixon aide G. Gordon Liddy and former FBI agents.
"At the heart of our story is a president that overstepped his bounds, illegal wiretapping and surveillance, and if you criticize that you're unpatriotic. And that sounded a little familiar to us," said John Scheinfeld, who wrote and directed the film with David Leaf.

| Jones pulls out of World Cup meet |
| 09.15.06 (2:16 pm) [edit] |
|
Marion Jones has opted to end her season after pulling out of this weekend's IAAF World Cup in Athens.
The American sprinter was selected for the USA team but does not feel she is in shape to run following a month-long absence after a positive drugs test.
She was cleared to run again last week after her 'B' sample for banned drug erythropoietin (EPO) proved negative.
"Unfortunately, I just don't feel that my race conditioning is there," Jones said in a statement.
"I was in top condition when my season was interrupted more than three weeks ago by the leak of my positive test.
"I was ready but missed top August competitions in Zurich, Monaco and Brussels and it has been more than six weeks since I raced.
"I am honoured to have been selected to compete on the United States team but I have always said that if I am not ready to compete in top form, I won't get on the track."

| Muslim anger grows at Pope speech |
| 09.15.06 (2:09 pm) [edit] |
|
A statement from the Vatican has failed to quell criticism of Pope Benedict XVI from Muslim leaders, after he made a speech about the concept of holy war.
Speaking in Germany, the Pope quoted a 14th Century Christian emperor who said Muhammad had brought the world only "evil and inhuman" things.
Pakistan's parliament passed a resolution on Friday criticising the Pope for making "derogatory" comments.
The Vatican said the Pope had not intended to offend Muslims.
"It is clear that the Holy Father's intention is to cultivate a position of respect and dialogue towards other religions and cultures, and that clearly includes Islam," said chief Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi in a statement.
But in spite of the statement, the pontiff returned to Rome to face a barrage of criticism, reports the BBC's David Willey in Rome.
The head of the Muslim Brotherhood said the Pope's remarks "aroused the anger of the whole Islamic world".

| Audi TT Coupé |
| 09.14.06 (10:58 pm) [edit] |
Audi's all-new TT is clearly related to its predecessor - its appearance seems like a sleeker, smoother version. If any criticism could have been levelled at the original TT, it would have been the lack of interior space and the fact that it was a less rewarding drive than some rivals. Audi has taken both of these factors on board to create a larger, but lighter TT Coupe with improved performance and handling and more space inside. The TT should, once again, be top of wish lists for people choosing a stylish sports coupe.

| Girls Just Want to Have Fun |
| 09.14.06 (2:35 pm) [edit] |
|
There are designers who are master craftsmen, great merchandisers or true visionaries. Then there are those designers who are just plain fun. Paris Hilton at HeatheretteAt 60-something, Betsey Johnson still has the exuberance and spunk of a teenager and it shows in every stitch of her collection, which for spring included pin-up girl dresses and shorts. And then there is Heatherette, which is unlike anything else you'll see at Fashion Week. Instead of the usual stuffy audience of socialites and suits, Heatherette packs in the female impersonators and club kids. Against this backdrop out strutted self-proclaimed iconic blonde, Paris Hilton. The audience -- instead of sitting with botox-bored faces -- shouted with glee at the performers, the models and (of course) Heatherette designer duo Richie Rich and Traver Rains. Now that was fun!

| The Psychological side |
| 09.14.06 (1:08 pm) [edit] |
|
According to psychoanalytic writers like Jacques Lacan, the moment a child first recognizes itself in a mirror begins a process that differentiates self and other. So begins a lifelong schism between identity and alienation. The Somatic Mirror explores this cognitive dissonance with art that uses the body to reflect and foster recognition of self/other –- often exposing a delightfully unstable middle ground.

| Xbox 360-Tiger Woods PGA Tour '07 Part I |
| 09.14.06 (12:43 am) [edit] |
|
Tee off with the Tiger for some next-gen golfing goodness
This year, the latest instalment of Tiger Woods is placing more emphasis on being all serious and practising very hard like a good boy. You have a Tour card - this is enhanced by practice and playing training events, making the game more about earning new skills, items and abilities through actually playing the game rather than simply buying them in a shop with your tour winnings.
Once you've polished your skills, it's off into the season long tournament against the PGA pros. This year you're getting 14 famous players to make walk around various fields in the sunshine for hours, including for the first time the monstrous John Daly, Luke Donald and Ian Poulter.
There are more courses this time around too, with Woodsy and pals able to hack their way around the grassy heavens of Bethpage Black, Pinehust #2, Cog Hill and Fancourt Links, plus there's even an entirely new made-up course set in New York's Central Park - which is sure to be fun!

The swing has been fiddled with too. Electronic Arts promise more in the way of physics to effect your shots, with the likes of 'ball spray' meaning you're much more likely to make a mess of things if you don't pay attention and rely too much on the automated shot and angle selections to do all the work.
We're also promised additional draw and fade shots to make putting more realistic and therefore miles harder, all of which should make Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 about as realistic as being there and actually getting smacked in the eye with a golf ball. Plus, for a laugh, some new point-earning accuracy mini games will give you more to do in multiplayer modes - all of which will work over Xbox Live to give the online side of things a lot more variety than in previous Tiger Woods' iterations.
The game is due out on Xbox 360 this October, and for those of you who care about such things, we also saw the PS3 version recently and it looked a little ropey and jerky - and nothing near as polished as the Xbox 360 version. We take only a small amount of pleasure from that. Roll on October!

Idols onslaught! Clay, Taylor, Fantasia, and four other alums of Fox's reality behemoth all have fall releases
Brace yourself for the ultimate American Idol elimination round. Within the next few months, seven former contestants will release albums — two of them on the same day. Before you check the sky for locusts, you might recall that a similar shower of Idols occurred in the fall of 2004, when Kelly Clarkson, Diana DeGarmo, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, and Clay Aiken all dropped discs. The champ? Clarkson's Breakaway — with 5 million copies sold, she silenced Aiken's Christmas album (1.2 million) and Fantasia's debut (1.7 million), while annihilating releases from Studdard (437,000) and DeGarmo (164,000). Fantasia, Studdard, and Aiken return for the latest bout, facing season 5's Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee, Chris Daughtry, and Kellie Pickler. How will America vote? We'll find out...
